Not for Profit Sector
The importance of not for profit and charities sector
The circles show how the Not-for-Profit sector sits in relation to others. The boundaries are blurring,
with many organisations working across or between traditional boundaries.
If you work in the sector you will already know that it is both big and broad. The charitable and wider
not-for-profit sector is both economically important and extremely diverse: it encompasses organisations
of widely varying scale, purposes and structure. They provide vital services and strengthen communities.
There are considerable benefits to society in having a not-for-profit sector that is efficient, effective
and up to date in its approach to its business processes just like any commercial organisation.
With a turnover of around £18 billion the not for profit sector is big business. There are ¼ million
registered charities, 600,000 organisations and nearly 4,000 new ones are added to the list each year.
Employment in the sector has grown strongly in recent years, and there is strong competition for the
attention of donors.
The charity marketplace is extremely competitive and charities must continuously improve and innovate just to
maintain their ability to deliver and meet their objectives. Charitable income has increased most rapidly in
larger charities with strong brands, and others must fight for their share of the donors funds.
